Flute Concerto (originally for Violin) (Flute and Piano) by Aram Khachaturian, Arranged for Flute and Piano by the composer, with Jean-Pierre Rampal, Published by International Music Company, Includes Flute part and Piano score.

This Piece made it onto our list ofThe 19 Best Flute Concertos Not by Mozart.

The Flute Concerto by Aram Khachaturian (1903 – 1978) might have made it much higher on this list were it actually written for the flute. From the compositional style, to the crazy-long phrases (that basically require circular breathing), to the whopping 40-minute run time, everything about Khachaturians masterpiece screams Violin Concerto. Originally written in 1940, the Khachaturian Violin Concerto was transcribed for flute by Jean-Pierre Rampal in 1968 at the request of the composer. Theres a lot to love about this concerto – the famous opening is itself a low register study, the exoticism that pervades all three movements is a nice harmonic break from Bach, Mozart, and Faure, and the main motives are themselves catchy little ear worms that belie their variations difficulties. Its definitely only for the bravest of flutists with a ton of stamina, but a monumental work that gives you instant street cred.
