Arianna (Keith Sharp) for String Orchestra

This unashamedly romantic piece is vocal in its concept. The title Arianna, an old feminine name meaning most holy or silver, refers to the angelic character at the centre of the main theme. The work opens with an energetic, galloping introduction featuring a commanding cello/ bass subject, which heralds the arrival of Arianna. Here the first violins carry the lyrical theme with rolling cello accompaniment. This expressive aria invites the string ensemble to pursue beauty of phrase and balance in an attractive bel canto setting. The middle section is underpinned by a pulsing quaver texture, and when united with its haunting B minor melody, is distinctly foreboding in effect. The sections are drawn together in an overarching ternary form, with tender closing where the interplay of diminishing lines may feature solos or front desks. The idiomatic part writing brings satisfaction to both listener and player.
