“Rain Spell,” a roughly 10-minute work scored for flute, clarinet, harp, piano, and vibraphone, reflects composer Tru Takemitsus deep interest in the natural movement of watera recurring theme in many of his compositions (such as Rain Coming, Water-Ways, Riverrun, Waterscape, Rain Tree, and Garden Rain), inspired in part by Claude Debussy. Written for the ensemble Sound Space Ark in Tokyo, the piece begins with scattered arpeggios and delicate fluttering textures that evoke water droplets. Unusual multiphonics suggest electronic insects, while the music gradually evolves into more extended, haunting melodic lines, enriched by soft, muted harmonics on the harp and piano. Rather than imitating the sound of rain, the work captures the mysterious, meditative atmosphere rain can createan example of Takemitsus profound and poetic approach to music.
