Los Caballos de Andalucia (Anne Svendsen) for String Orchestra

Los Carballos de Andalucia is a rhythmic Spanish-flavoured piece in 3/4 time that would suite middle school level players.The key is E minor with the notation range remaining in first position for all instruments. The viola part doubles the second violin part to add a solid mid support for the upper melody and a balanced counter melody line when required. Throughout the piece players are encouraged to create bold sound colours using full bows and exaggerated dynamics, contrasting with accents and crisp rhythmic bowing in outer sections. The piano part drives the work rhythmically and fills in harmonically to enhance the overall performance. The work is approximately two minutes in length and would make a lively finale for a concert program.
